French cement giant fast-tracking planned plant for reconstruction in Indonesia
PARIS (AP) - Lafarge SA, the world's largest cement producer, said Monday that plans for a new plant on Indonesia's tsunami-stricken island of Sumatra have been fast-tracked because of the expected boost in cement demand from reconstruction efforts.
Lafarge's one existing plant was nearly washed away by the wall of water on Dec. 26 and more than 250 employees were still missing.
"It will be restarted as soon as possible, but probably in phases," said Stephanie Tessier, Lafarge vice-president for communications. "It will be at least some months because the plant was severely damaged."
The new plant, on which a final decision has yet to be made, would double the approximately one million tonnes in annual cement production capacity that Lafarge had in Indonesia before the tidal waves hit.
Plans for the new plant, near the city of Medan in northern Sumatra, had been drawn up in the late 1990s but were shelved following the southeast Asian financial crisis in 1998.
Lafarge began dusting off those plans several months ago, but now the tsunami has speeded things up, Tessier said.
There is no timetable for construction of the new plant, she said.
Lafarge employed 625 people at its plant in Lho-Nga before the tsunami hit. Of those, 362 have been found alive and well, eight are injured and three have been confirmed dead. It is without news of 252 employees.
Lafarge's cement sales in Indonesia totalled 48 million euros ($62.8 million US) in 2004.
